Globe Theatre

The original Globe Theatre opened in 1599 during the reign of Elizabeth I, but was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1613. A new theatre was built to replace it only to be closed by the Puritans in 1642, since then very little is known about its history.

Now after almost 400 years the new Globe Theatre built just 200 yards from the original site has been opened to the public once again. The rebuilt playhouse was officially inaugurated by Her Majesty the Queen on Thursday the 12th June 1997 and the first opening season ran from the 9th May to 21st September.

Every summer it offers plays by William Shakespeare and his contemporaries. In order to re-create the original atmosphere authentic clothing is worn by the actors as the plays are acted out on the type of stage they were originally written for.

The Globe Exhibition offers interactive displays and live demonstrations, a chance to see and experience how costumes, special effects and music were made as well as the story behind rebuilding the Globe.
