Imperial War Museum

The Imperial War Museum is housed in the former Bethlehem Hospital built in 1811. This award winning museum contains thousands of exhibits from the twentieth Century wars and the story of the people who were part of them working on the home front or engaged in battle.

The vast exhibits gallery houses one of the most impressive collections of military and naval weapons tanks, armoured cars, artillery guns and aircraft including an original Battle of Britain Spitfire 1A.

Among the museums permanent installations is The First World War Experience, a walk through re-creation of life and times in the battlefields trenches.

Experience the Blitz in the Second World War and life in the air raid shelters of London as well as on the streets above.

Learn about life after the war years, the Cold War, the Nuclear arms race, British Commonwealth troops fighting in the Far East, the troubled times in Northern Ireland and the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands.

There are also galleries displaying uniforms, medals, firearms, historical paintings and photographs.
